In Spring 2023, RenuWell Energy Solutions and Iron & Earth flipped the switch on two pilot projects in the Municipal District of Taber to turn rust into green.
Partially funded by the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre and Alberta Innovates, the pilot projects demonstrate an innovative approach to solar power development.
Abandoned well sites are scattered throughout oil rich Alberta - in fact 37% of all oil and gas wells in the province are considered abandoned by the Alberta Energy Regulator. Many of these wells cannot be reclaimed as productive agricultural land despite the best intentions of well owners or operators. Using existing infrastructure solar power production can bring new life to old well site.
RenuWell has the potential to cut the remediation costs for abandoned oil and gas wells, as well as protect valuable agricultural land in Southern Alberta.
