From Diesel Dependence to Community-Owned Solar in Cartwright, Labrador

In August/September 2025, Iron & Earth partnered with the NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) for a solar energy installation and community training program in the remote community of Cartwright, NL. With support from the Town of Cartwright and the Sandwich Bay 50+ Club, solar installers from Green Sun Rising and 11 community members installed a 10.2kW system on the roof of the local Marion Centre.

With Cartwright being a primarily diesel-operated community, this system will provide cleaner, more affordable energy to the Marion Centre, which will help this community hub fund and expand their existing programming. In order for the local community to take on stewardship of the system, Iron & Earth trained a group of community residents on the installation and maintenance of the system, boosting their energy literacy and opening them to potential future career opportunities at the same time.

This project was funded by the Peter Gilgan foundation, RBC’s Tech for Nature, TD, the Government of Canada, and its Future Skills Program. For more information on this and other initiatives, visit ironandearth.org
