CLIMATE CAREER PORTAL VOLUNTEER MENTOR - TORONTO

ABOUT IRON & EARTH

Established in 2016 by fossil fuel workers, Iron & Earth was sparked by growing concerns of climate change and a collective desire to build a more prosperous and sustainable future. These workers saw opportunity in the transferability of their skills and recognized that they had a role to play in realizing a Just Transition. Over the years, Iron & Earth has grown in its approach to empowering a Just Transition. Our mandate has expanded to include directly engaging with communities and supporting a spectrum of willing workers in addition to those from the fossil fuel industry.

Job summary:

Iron & Earth conducts a Mentorship program through our Climate Career Portal to support workers looking to transition to the green economy. Through one-on-one sessions with mentees, mentors will provide support and guidance to workers who want to transition industries, grow their career, and explore new opportunities in the green economy.

Iron & Earth is looking for Mentors who can commit between one to four (1-4) hours per month on a part-time and contract basis.  As mentorship sessions are  scheduled by prospective Mentees, the actual workload will vary from month to month based on demand.

Sessions, therefore,  will only be scheduled based on mentors availability,  using the scheduling software Calendly.  This gives mentors the freedom to reduce or increase their available hours based on their personal schedule. Mentors will report to the Innovation & STEM Manager.

Key deliverables and duties:

  • Provide Mentor services to Iron & Earth in the format of 1 hour virtual sessions. These sessions will be scheduled by the Mentee through the Climate Career Portal;
  • Act in accordance with Iron & Earth Mentorship values and guidelines as will be outlined in the document “Mentor Orientation Package” that is shared upon onboarding.
  • Keep their availability up to date and accurate through the scheduling software Calendly so that sessions can be booked to provide Mentorship services;
  • Submit a brief and high level summary of each Mentorship session to the Innovation & STEM Manager;
  • Attend quarterly sessions with other Mentors and the Innovation & STEM Manager to share feedback and learnings.
  • Optional: Mentors may choose to host online events to share their knowledge, or attend panel discussions hosted by the CCP team. Cooperation and potential compensation for these events will be discussed separately.

Job requirements:

Mentors should have the following qualifications:

  • Strong experience in the renewable energy, energy efficiency, or sustainability sector
  • Experience in leadership or mentorship roles
  • Experience working with people from equity deserving communities. Formal DEI or sensitivity training is an asset.
  • Fluent in English. Fluency in French or other languages is an asset.
  • Location in the Toronto area or GTA. All work is remote regardless of location.

We encourage mentors from equity deserving communities to apply in order to increase representation in green industries.
