Bullfrog Power joins oilsands workers in bringing green jobs to Newfoundland and Labrador

St. John’s, NL Today Bullfrog Power, Canada's leading green energy provider, and Iron & Earth East are happy to announce a new partnership to spark green jobs in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Iron & Earth East is the Atlantic Canadian chapter of an oilsands worker-led group pushing for green energy investments and renewables training for traditional energy sector employees who are out of work. The group has been crowdfunding to build a greenhouse that is powered by 100% renewable energy, all year round.

Starting today, August 8, until the end of the fundraiser on August 16, Bullfrog Power will match any donations made to Iron & Earth East’s Greenhouse crowdfunder until their goal is reached: https://www.startsomegood.com/GreenRevolutionNL

“Iron & Earth’s greenhouse is an important demonstration of the potential Newfoundland and Labrador has to develop more green energy projects,” says Ron Seftel, CEO of Bullfrog Power. “Bullfrog Power’s contribution was made possible by its customers from across the country – ranging from individual homes to major corporations, such as Unilever Canada – that believe in a renewably powered future.”

The greenhouse will use the latest technologies so we can demonstrate the power of modern renewables and help showcase how our province can deal with food security issues by powering LED grow lights in the winter months. We will incorporate solar and one other site-specific technology (micro-hydro, wind or geothermal) to power, heat and light the greenhouse year round. The opportunity will also be used to bring in a top solar trainer to provide a 'train the trainer' solar energy course to increase the region's renewable energy skill set.

“Every month thousands of oil and gas workers lose their jobs, and yet solutions for our economy and the climate are all around us,” said Adam Cormier, a member of Iron & Earth East and former oilsands worker. "Our goal is to spark the green energy economy and finally get training opportunities here in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

“We hear a lot of misinformation about renewables, so we thought as a first step we would build demonstration projects so people can begin to understand the power and efficiency of modern clean energy,” Cormier said.

Renewable energy is becoming increasingly cost effective as investments in wind and solar outpace that of coal and gas by two to one. Iron & Earth and Bullfrog Power believe the time has come for Atlantic Canada to harness the renewable energy resources available to the region.

About Iron & Earth

Iron & Earth is led by oilsands workers committed to incorporating more renewable energy projects into their work scope. The group came together during the spring of 2015 when oil prices started to fall, and is pushing for investments in green energy and re-training in renewables. Our membership has since grown to include workers from a variety of industrial trades, including boilermakers, electricians, pipefitters, ironworkers and labourers. We want to see workers and families thrive. We want the green energy revolution to bring us closer to financial security and our climate targets — all at the same time.

Iron & Earth is committed to partnering with Indigenous workers to empower their communities to become self-sufficient in training programs, clean energy transition projects, and employment opportunities to combat environmental racism. It falls to all of us to continue the work of healing and reconciliation in our communities and our organizations. Our relationship with the land and the people who live here shapes who we are. It is in the spirit of reconciliation and honouring the past that we recognize treaties and agreements wherever they are and wherever we work.

We also acknowledge all peoples who live, work, and play on this land, and who honour and celebrate this territory.
As individuals and teams we may make mistakes along the way, but we are dedicated to growth, openness, compassion, and forgiveness. These principles in our work are essential to building successful and healthy relationships with individuals, communities, organizations, and governments.

We look forward to building a path to lead us to a better relationship with Indigenous nations and the environment around us based on peace, friendship, and respect.
