INTRODUCTION

If you are looking to make a difference in the lives of hard-working Canadians, contribute to reconciliation with Indigenous communities, and help transform the Canadian energy industry, don’t miss this exciting opportunity at Iron & Earth!

We are a growing organization and are hiring an Edmonton Chapter Director to join the central leadership team and lead Edmonton Chapter activities. The core mission of the Edmonton Chapter Director will be to lead a sustainable and impactful chapter in Edmonton, AB. This will include developing a community of like minded fossil fuel industry workers who are committed to building a sustainable energy economy.

*We have recently secured an additional $6000 grant towards our Edmonton Chapter and are reposting this position due to this update.

ABOUT IRON & EARTH

Iron & Earth formed around the lunchroom tables of the oilsands during an oil price crash which resulted in over 100,000 oilpatch employees losing their jobs between 2015 and 2017. We realized that our trade skills were transferable to the renewable energy industry and recognized the urgency of diversifying into these technologies. Beyond the financial benefits, we were excited about the opportunity to help build a more sustainable energy industry. So, in Spring 2016 we launched Iron & Earth to create a better future for ourselves, our coworkers, and the planet. Since then we have built a membership of over 800 fossil fuel industry workers passionate about our vision.

Our top-level goal is to help ensure a prosperous transition towards global carbon neutrality by 2050. Our mission in pursuit of this goal is to empower fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers to build a sustainable energy economy. Our vision is that fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers will play a leading role in building the energy infrastructure required to reach global climate targets. We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This opportunity is perfect for a passionate, enthusiastic trades worker with experience in oil & gas or coal industries who wishes to work at the cutting edge of the renewable energy industry in Canada. The Chapter Director will work closely with the HQ team to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to be an effective member of the Iron & Earth community. There will, however, be an expectation for the individual to work independently from the team and arrange their own work schedule in order to complete the objectives for this particular project.

DELIVERABLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The I&E Edmonton Chapter Director will be responsible for managing the day to day activities of chapter management while also achieving the following deliverables:

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for the chapter
  • Interview 100 Edmonton based fossil fuel industry worker members to gain their insights regarding the direction of the chapter
  • Host four “Shop Talk” nights to connect fossil fuel industry workers with opportunities, knowledge, and resources regarding sustainable energy
  • Act as a spokesperson during conferences, stakeholder engagement opportunities and media interviews
  • Represent Iron & Earth during the RenuWell project wrap up meeting in Taber
  • Identify an opportunity to develop an Edmonton based educational campaign or sustainable energy project of significance, which would be initiated in 2020
  • Establish a steering committee of 3-5 people
  • Establish a base of three core chapter volunteers
  • Contribute to helping 10+ fossil fuel industry workers in the Edmonton area diversify into sustainable energy careers
  • Help secure $20k in funding for ongoing chapter growth and development

ABOUT OUR CHAPTER MODEL

Chapters are the core of our organizing model and our ability to achieve scale for three reasons:

  1. Chapters provide a hub for relationship building between workers and supporters who align with our vision and strategy. These relationships provide the foundation for developing meaningful change.
  2. Chapter members identify challenges and/or opportunities that Iron & Earth is uniquely positioned to address in the community or region. Chapter members then design and deploy campaigns, projects, programs, or events tailored to address the identified need or opportunity. These regional contexts and solutions can often only be understood and developed at the local level.
  3. Chapters support the scaling of national initiatives, through regional involvement in national campaigns or helping scale proven project and training program models.
