We're hiring a Director of Communications!







Iron & Earth is an oilsands worker-led not-for-profit committed to empowering oil and gas
workers to build a renewable energy economy. Since Iron & Earth officially launched in March of
2016, we have built a membership of over 500 energy sector workers, many of whom have
direct experience working in the oilsands. Many of these workers have been negatively affected
by the decline in oil prices and are uniquely positioned to transition into the renewable energy
industry with minimal up-skilling required.

Our membership imagines a future where Canada is a leading innovator in the renewable
energy sector, and has a thriving renewable energy export market of services, products, and
intellectual property. We are developing programs and campaigns to make these opportunities
tangible and accessible for workers. Each of our campaigns at Iron & Earth is focused on
ensuring future energy development in Canada provides continued job opportunities for
workers and enables Canada to meet its climate commitments.


The core mission of the Director of Communications for Iron & Earth will be to continue
developing a persuasive, engaging public narrative and effective strategic communications
practices at our organization.

The primary objectives for the person within this position will be to:

  • Extend the reach of all Iron & Earth branches of communication across multiple media channels
  • Design and deliver a persuasive narrative that connects energy workers and everyday Canadians to our network and our solutions
  • Grow our influence, reach, membership and funding streams
  • Inspire an energy paradigm shift with a wide range of unlikely allies



 Strategy development

  • Work with team members to develop campaign, membership engagement,
    communications and fundraising strategies
  • Seek out and work with the most innovative and effective tools, technologies, strategies
    and stories to convey our work and engage our membership

Core communications

  • Write and edit blogs, op-eds, media releases, mass membership communications,
    reports, social media posts (eg: twitter, facebook), advertising and documentation
  • Manage the tone and voice of the organization
  • Oversee the publication of op-ed’s by team members, workers, and directors

Stakeholder engagement

  • Grow media relations and contact lists, and distribute press releases and op-eds to local,
    national, and international new media sources
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders, labour and organizational allies


  • Grow our list of monthly and one-time individual donors
  • Identify opportunities for online fundraising campaigns (events, programs, sponsorship's,
    swag and key milestones)

Additional activities (Experience Pending)

  • Videography, film-making and photography
  • Graphic design
  • Website design and development using the NationBuilder platform
  • Public speaking at events


Mandatory qualities

  • Ability to carry out the mission, objectives, and activities included above
  • Personal values that are aligned with our organization’s mission and objectives
  • Exceptional written and communication skills
  • Understanding of oil and gas, renewable energy industries and political landscape in Canada

Additional skills and experience preferred

  • Graphic design
  • Videography and photography
  • Nationbuilder platform and/or web development
  • Post-secondary degree in communications or other relevant fields
  • Media relations
  • Public speaking

Salary and hours

Salary will be $20 to $35/hr and between 15-30hrs/week based on experience and


We have a largely mobile work environment, but preference will be given to those who live in
Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria or St.John’s.
